Ali Kavianian, M.D.
Dr. Kavianian is CHOC Children’s former Surgeon-in-Chief, a position he held from 2008 until his retirement in November 2010. He served on CHOC’s medical staff since 1983, and is a former chair of the hospital’s Department of Surgery. Dr. Kavianian provided leadership for pediatric surgical services, helping to enhance quality care and patient safety. He has also played a critical role in the hospital’s master planning process, which includes the addition of pediatric surgical suites and ancillary services in the new tower. Dr Kavianian is originally from Tehran, Iran where he graduated from the Tehran University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at Morrisania Hospital, New York, and his fellowship at the Harrison Department of Surgical Research University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He also completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He returned to Iran, where served as attending pediatric surgeon and chief of pediatric surgery at Tehran Children’s Medical Center Tehran, Iran (1966-1982). Dr. Kavianian has taken an active role in supporting CHOC’s new tower. He is a member of the “Change CHOC, Change the World” Campaign Committee and founded IAM4CHOC in 2009. He started this group to broaden awareness and to cultivate fundraising for CHOC’s campaign within Orange County’s Iranian American community. They have raised $181,450, to date.
