Completing CHOC Children’s

Academic and Research Collaboration with UCI

The top children’s hospitals of America all have academic and research affiliations with leading universities and their medical schools. These collaborations feed the intellectual agenda of the hospital, giving pediatric subspecialty doctors a platform for research and teaching and, in the process keeping fresh ideas, new clinical protocols, and strategies for cures flowing between the entities.

Years in the making, we are proud to have recently completed an historic agreement with the University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine) for a formal educational and research affiliation. It is an affiliation in which each party benefits tremendously from the other’s capabilities and assets.

CHOC Children’s provides the UC Irvine School of Medicine access to an unprecedented clinical platform displaying a breadth and volume of pediatric illnesses students would not likely see at the university hospital.

In addition, CHOC Children’s physicians provide UC Irvine medical students with rich mentoring in a CHOC–UC Irvine pediatric residency program that has the potential to become the largest in California. In return, CHOC Children’s doctors gain access to teaching positions at the UC Irvine School of Medicine and the basic science research infrastructure of one of the world’s great scientific university campuses.

In the coming years, much work must be done to build and refine the nature of the collaboration. But we are already on our way. This key ingredient in our strategy to complete CHOC Children’s migration from a community hospital to a nationally recognized premier children’s hospital is now in place.
