Cancer Institute Milestones

Phase I Oncology Clinical Trial Center for Children—CHOC has been designated as a Phase I clinical trial facility by the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the nation’s predominant clinical trials group for children and young adult patients with cancer. CHOC is the only hospital in the southwestern United States—and one of only 21 in North America—offering children Phase I clinical trials for new drugs or treatments.

This designation extends the hospital’s continuum of care for situations in which conventional treatment methods fail. It also provides alternatives for patients suffering from diseases or disorders for which no treatment protocols have been established.

CHOC Children’s Cancer Institute awarded full approval with commendation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons—CHOC is the only children’s hospital in the state, and one of only 11 pediatric cancer programs in the nation, to receive CoC approval. CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.

Approval by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer. To meet the standards necessary for Commission approval, each cancer program and the organization that manages it must undergo a rigorous evaluation process and a stringent review of its performance. In order to maintain approval, each CoC-approved facility must undergo an onsite review every three years.

Cord Blood Bank—CHOC Children’s operates the only hospital-based cord blood bank in Orange County. CHOC is also the first hospital in California to perform unrelated cord blood transplants. As a member of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), a global transplant network that connects more than 450 leading centers worldwide, CHOC adheres to the strict NMDP standards of practice.

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Unit— Orange County’s only dedicated facility, the unit is staffed with 100 percent chemotherapy and biotherapy certified nurses.
