“We are the primary source of orthopaedic care in the region for managing kids with congenital deformities, genetic disorders, and sports injuries.”

Afshin Aminian, MD, Pediatric Surgeon, CHOC Orthopaedic Institute

CHOC Children’s performed the first Fusionless Growth-Preserving Scoliosis Surgery West of the Mississippi. This surgery, performed by Dr. Aminian in 2007, enables families to receive treatment locally and avoid stressful plane trips seeking care in other parts of the country.

Hip Dysplasia Surgery—In 2008, the CHOC orthopaedic surgical team, lead by Dr. François Lalonde, performed this complex periacetabular osteotomy designed to prevent early arthritis of the hip—the first ever at CHOC.

Overview

Pediatric orthopaedics is about more than broken bones and sports injuries. There are families with children who have life-compromising congenital conditions like clubfoot, hip, hand, and spine deformities. There are children with rheumatologic conditions and other joint problems. And there are children with neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy, where orthopaedic care is likely required for a lifetime.

In Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles Counties, many children who require complex orthopaedic care have difficulty accessing it because there are simply not enough pediatric orthopaedic specialists or clinics that offer the comprehensive scope of services required. Unique and complicated cases that were once being seen at children’s hospitals elsewhere are now being treated at CHOC.

What is the Orthopaedic Institute?

The Orthopaedic Institute at CHOC Children’s is comprised of highly experienced pediatric orthopaedic surgeons and specialists along with a multidisciplinary team that provides a complete range of clinical, surgical, and ancillary support services. Orthopaedic pediatric specialists programs are rare. CHOC has established the most comprehensive orthopaedic treatment center in the region—a place that understands the physical and emotional needs of children and their families.
