Orthopaedic Institute Milestones

Orthopaedic Institute Launched in 2007—The only program of its kind in the region offering a wide range of comprehensive subspecialty programs specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of complex orthopaedic injury, illness, and disorders in children and adolescents.

First Fusionless Growth-Preserving Scoliosis Surgery West of the Mississippi— This surgery, performed by Dr. Aminian in 2007, enables families to receive treatment locally and avoid stressful plane trips seeking care in other parts of the country.

Limb Salvage Surgery—In 2008, a team of specialists assembled through the Orthopaedic Institute’s Musculoskeletal Tumor program used reconstructive surgery to save the limb of a patient with bone cancer. This was the first limb salvage surgery ever performed at CHOC.

Hip Dysplasia Surgery—In 2008, the CHOC orthopaedic surgical team, lead by Dr. François Lalonde, performed this complex periacetabular osteotomy designed to prevent early arthritis of the hip—the first ever at CHOC.

New Initiatives—The Orthopaedic Institute plans to roll out its Fracture Management program in 2009, to allow timely expert care of pediatric fractures. Also in the works is a new sports medicine clinic focusing on injury prevention, lead by Dr. John Schlechter.
